The Old Baldy Trail is a half-mile loop that leads to the top of Old Baldy Dune, while the Portage Trail is a mile-long, out-and-back trail that winds past wooded areas and dunes. Many of the parks overlook the bay, as well, which is a real treat come sunset. ![]() Visitors can get their fill of lake life either on one of the many boat tours, or by biking along the Little Traverse Wheelway. Of course, the main feature of Petoskey is Little Traverse Bay, one of the most beautiful sections of Lake Michigan. But it is thoroughly a city built for the 21st century, with ample amounts of park space, a bustling marina, a high-end shopping and restaurant district, and plenty of hotels. Petoskey holds onto its 19th-century heritage in the form of its Victorian architecture and historic Gaslight District. But it packs a punch for travelers who come to stay at the lovely lakefront resorts that run up and down the shoreline. It's certainly not a big town, with less than 10,000 residents. Tucked up in the northwestern corner of the state, right on the shores of Little Traverse Bay in Lake Michigan, this historic lake town is charming, picturesque, and packed with attractions and things to do. We do ride often and this path had a few moderately hard hills, 2 steep ones and one long gradual one going back into Charlevoix.Petoskey, Michigan has a certain something that will make you want to stick around for a while. Walkers and runners were present in the more populated areas. The path was well maintained and there was not a lot of congestion. The best thing is that between Petoskey and Harbor Springs is the Petoskey Brewery which is a perfect spot to stop for a snack and cold beer to refuel. The second half from Petoskey to Harbor Springs has a lot more to see but a lot more driveways and streets to cross to you more pedal leisurely. You could get your speed up because there not too many driveways to pass over. The first half from Charlevoix to Petoskey was very scenic and a lot through woods. There is a local bike path (which is on the side of a not busy road) which hooks up to the big path he easily directed us toward. My husband and I stayed in Charlevoix and took off on the path (which technically begins across the street from the AmericInn) about 9am but we did have to ask a local how to get out of downtown Charlevoix and hook up with the path because we did not want to ride on the busy road.
